British- US collaboration with the United States would lead to a stronger US Middle East policy / Europeans would not be able to preserve the JCPOA / Britain's exit from the European Union would reduce the JCPOA’s impact.

The Iranian International Studies Association (IISA) with collaboration of Fars News Agency's Media faculty held a meeting titled "Shifting Power in Britain and its Impact on European Policies on JCPOA " on Tuesday 30 July,2019.  Dr. Ali Adami, Professor of International Relations at Allameh Tabataba'i University, and Dr. Seyed Reza Mirtaher, the Senior Expert in Strategy and International Affairs, posed their expertise insights.

British Coordination with US Will Make the US Middle Eastern Policies Bolder

At the beginning, Dr. Saburi, the head of IISA, referred to the historic backdrop of political relations between Iran and the UK and the existence of a general cynicism in Iranian public opinion and noted: "For the Britain, the issue of choice is more and more important than dealing with it. The issue has now become their most pressing domestic crisis, but with the advent of Boris Johnson, the notion of leaving the JCPOA by Britain has been boosted.”

"The realization of British independence and the liberation of the European Union's structural constraints will reinforce Britain’s tendency to US policy and we should expect intensifying pressures on Iran”. Dr. Sabouri said.

Europeans are unable to adopt independent policies even if they want to stay in the JCPOA.

In the following, Dr. Adami outlined the need for a detailed understanding of Europe and the role of the countries involved in the JCPOA. According to him, the European Union's Thermidor era has begun and JCPOA is on the verge of early weakening, so, we are now witnessing serious divisions among Europeans.

Emphasizing that the division between Europe and the US is becoming more serious and their relation is more fragile today, Dr. Adami said: "despite of being influential, Europeans today are more passive and incapable in foreign policy."

Britain's withdrawal from JCPOA will reduce the impact of Europeans on the JCPOA.

Dr. Mir-Tahir analyzed recent British political developments and asked about the importance of JCPOA for the Europeans and how much they are willing to risk for the survival of JCPOA. “It seems that JCPOA is vital for Europeans in order to maintain regional and international peace and stability”, Mirtaher stated. He, also, analyzed the issue of BREXIT and outlined the main goal of Britain from BREXIT is exit from all EU's limitations in all areas and the release of financial obligations to the EU. At the same time, he saw BREXIT as the most important domestic crisis preventing Britain from dealing with JCPOA, However, after tackling the BREXIT issue, it would be more possible that Britain leave the JCPOA, too.

He concluded: "Britain's withdrawal from JCPOA will reduce the impact of other European sides on JCPOA, and therefore the likelihood of Europeans withdrawal from JCPOA would escalate.

At the end of the meeting, a number of members of the Iranian International Studies Association discussed and posed their views.
